4 Tips on How to Talk to Your Parents

September 28, 2014 by Priyanka Leave a Comment

It’s usually not easy for children to communicate with their parents. I love my parents dearly, but I’m sometimes confused on how to talk to them.

Talk to Your Parents

Talk to Your Parents

It’s a catch 22 situation for both sides. Parents may feel they don’t want to overstep their boundaries. Children may feel their parents may not necessarily identify with or be interested in what they have to say.

I wanted to share some of my tips on how t0 better communicate with your parents.

Watch a television show or movie together

In my family, we spend time a lot by watching television together. We have Indian channels at home and though I don’t really like the soap operas, I still sit and watch them with my parents. It gives me the opportunity to spend time with them. Another thing we do is watch movies together. My mother, sister, and I are movie buffs and we always have entertainment gossip to chat about!

Have dinner together and ask about their day

Make the time to have dinner with your parents occasionally. If you don’t live with your parents, take time on the weekends to share a meal. This is the perfect time to have  a conversation. You can start with asking how their day went and then touch on other topics.

Ask them how they are feeling right now

Ask your parents directly how they are feeling! Give them an opportunity to express their emotions to you. It will make you both closer. Your parents will appreciate you for this, too.

Ask For Advice

This one always works! I usually do this with my father especially. He loves to talk and nothing makes him feel more important and loved when I ask him for advice.

Have you tried any of these steps? Please share with me in the comments.
