Communication is the core of every relationship. It’s how we express our desires and feelings. This should be easy, right? But it seems to not be easy considering how simple matters could be resolved through seamless communication.
Get Back to Basics
I have learned through experience it’s best to get back to basics when it comes to communicating your needs and desires. I express my needs in simple and direct language.
Don’t Beat around the Bush
Say what you want to say with as little as words and directly as possible. I’ll give you an example. If you’re not up for going for a night out with your friends, and your friends keep pushing you to go in good nature. You may say: “I’m not sure, won’t it get too late? And I’m not sure how much fun it would be…”
The truth is you don’t really want to go, but you don’t want to disappoint your friends, so instead of being direct, you’re going in circles and making excuses.
Keep it Simple and Direct
Why not say something like this instead? “I’d love to join you guys, but I’m feeling tired and need this weekend to get well rested. Next time, I’ll join.”
Did you notice the difference? You used simple language and were super direct.
It’s about Expressing Your Desires and Needs
Every person on this planet has needs and desires. You have full right to communicate them as long as you do so in a polite and mature manner.
