Creative expression is born when there is freedom and space in the process. Being a writer, I feel I am a supremely creative person. I don’t want to limit myself to just writing either. I want to see my daring, creative expression manifest itself in various ways.
Let Go of Perfection
From my experience, the number one thing I have learned is to let go of perfection. When you are trying to control every aspect, you’re living in a very tight and restrained way. You’re not giving space for your thoughts to bubble.
When I wrote the first draft of my novel, I tried to make everything perfect. I would write a page, go back, and obsess over every word. I thought about what the reader would think.
Since part of the story pertaining to the protagonist Shivani’s family was inspired by my own family, I also became conscious of including certain information. I also worried about whether the relationship between Shivani and Alan would be too shocking.
I was only suppressing my own creativity. When I finally let go of what the world would think and let go of my own worries, I focused on writing an honest book.
Creativity Likes to Flow Freely
Practice ways of dropping into your heart space. When you’re coming from your heart space, you’ll find your creativity flowing freely and manifesting itself in ways you never imagined. Embrace the chaos and messiness of the process.
How do you let your creativity express and manifest itself? Please share with me in the comments.
